Bishops Waltham win on penalties.

Hedge End Town exited the cup following a penalty shootout defeat away to Bishops Waltham after a hard-fought and entertaining 0-0 draw.

With seven first-team players unavailable and the manager away on a family holiday, the Town squad travelled to the game with clear instructions and a focus firmly on the bigger picture.

With the club’s priority being to win the league, the decision was made to rest key players and avoid extending the current cup run. The aim was to remain competitive, keep the game tight and if the match could not be decided during the 90 minutes, allow the tie to be settled by penalties.

The players followed those instructions while still putting in a committed and disciplined performance.

Hedge End started brightly and thought they had taken an early lead, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Both sides had opportunities during the first half, but neither team was able to find a breakthrough.

Town’s defence stood firm throughout the afternoon, dealing well with pressure from the hosts. Chris was also in fine form between the posts, producing several impressive saves to keep the scores level.

Despite the hot September conditions, both teams continued to work hard. After taking on water and recovering during half-time, Town returned for the second half ready to continue.

Changed were made during the second half to freshen up the side and maintain the team’s defensive strength. Hedge End continued to work hard and created further moments going forward, although the offside flag again prevented opportunities from developing.

With neither side able to find a winning goal, the referee brought the match to an end with the score at 0-0, sending the tie to a penalty shootout.

Bishops Waltham were successful in the shootout and progressed to the next round, where they will face New Milton.

Although Town exit the competition, the result allows the club to concentrate fully on its main objectives for the season.

Credit must go to the Hedge End Town players who gave everything on the day and carried out the game plan with discipline and commitment.

Despite the penalty shootout defeat, spirits remained high at full-time.

Focus remains on the season ahead.
